The New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning agreed to a six-year contract extension worth $97 million that will guarantee the player $35 million. The news was given anonymously on Wednesday since the deal has not yet been signed; however, should the deal go through, Manning would certainly become one of the best-paid players in the NFL. There was a chance that the deal would be signed on Wednesday, but apparently both sides wanted to review the contract one last time.
Giant general manager Jerry Reese said that it was important for both parties to the contract to agree thoroughly to the deal, especially as the quarterback was an essential part of the team. Manning has helped the Giants to many of their most recent achievements.
“He is a franchise quarterback,” Reese said. “He has done everything we asked him to do. He has come in, taken a lot of flack from you guys (the media) and he just keeps going. He does what we ask him on the field and he does what we ask him to do off the field. He is a good football player.”
This contract extension will give Eli Manning a salary of roughly $15.3 million per year, almost $200.000 higher than the deal that the All-star cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha signed with the Oakland Raiders. In fact, he will be paid even more than his older brother, with Peyton receiving $14.7 million annually in his contract with the Indianapolis Colts.
Eli Manning first signed with the Giants back in 2004 when he was picked No 1 overall in the NFL draft; he signed to earn $9.1 million this year, but his contract was about to expire at the end of the upcoming season. Manning has several times expressed his desire to remain with the Giants, and he has been discussing a contract deal with the team for several months. At the same time, the Giants were concerned about losing the quarterback to free agency at the end of the season.
Manning has joined the Giants in the playoffs for the last four years but it was not until last year that his skills came to light; he helped the Giants defeat the seemingly undefeatable New England Patriots in a game that made him a legend. Manning was not only named MVP for the Super Bowl, but also had his first Pro-Bowl last season after making 21 touchdown passes and having only 10 interceptions, leading the Giants o a 12-4 record.
Manning has started the last 71 games with the New York Giants, the third longest streak among active quarterbacks for last season. In his career, Manning has completed 56 percent of his passes and has thrown 98 touchdown passes against 74 interceptions.
