As you probably would have guessed, at this point you do not have many choices in terms of gear. If this is your first character you are hit with the monetary factor (not having enough Kinah for things) and will be forced to just go without.
At this point, farming for gear is really not worth doing. You will obtain a few items while leveling (or questing) and there are many quests that also reward you with gear.
In terms of what you will be looking for, you want leather armor (not cloth!) and either daggers or swords. All other weapons can be tossed (sold to the NPC traders or other players – if anyone wants to buy them) at this point.
You will be obtaining Dual-weapon Mastery, so you will be able to wield two weapons at once. This can be either two daggers, two swords, or a sword and a dagger. Any of these combinations is perfectly fine right now, so go for the two you have with the highest attack power. As you get new daggers or swords from quests or leveling, swap out your weakest one with your new one. This will help keep your physical attack power at its peak.
Enhancements
At this point it would be a good idea to start learning about enhancements, namely the Mana Stones. While you are leveling you should come across many different ones that add to your statistics like health, mana, parry, evasion, shielding, etc.
At this point you are going to want to save only the parry, evasion, and health stones and toss out the rest (sell to the NPC's). These are helpful to us at this point because we are forced to fight mobs on a head-to-head basis, so the evasion helps out a lot. As for the health ones, these help because they give greater survivability. This is not much of an issue until doing the level 9 quest, requiring you to go down into a dungeon (for Elyos) or ravine (for Asmodians). Regardless, especially for this event they will be more than helpful.
